Greater Manchester practices saving over 90,000 hours a year with patient check-in

We worked with NHS Greater Manchester Shared Services (GMSS) to provide practices across eight CCGs with our patient check-in solution. With the year-long project now complete, the 250 practices involved have seen an improvement to patient experience and significant time savings.

Back at the beginning of 2018, we kicked off a project with GMSS to install over 250 patient check-in machines in practices across Greater Manchester. Driven by a need to have one uniform, maintained and secure system throughout the practices that use EMIS Web and are supported by GMSS, the project has had a big impact on those involved. Why Egton?

When the WannaCry outbreak happened in May 2017, organisations across the NHS became acutely aware of the necessity of replacing outdated systems. When GMSS found that many practices in their region were using old and unsecure check-in systems, they decided that they needed to make updates across their entire estate.

GMSS required a system that was fully managed and came with certain security and compliance assurances. Our patient check-in solution was the perfect fit: not only does it run on Windows 10, but our fully managed service means we can also patch practices’ operating and antivirus software for them.

And so began our year-long collaboration with GMSS. Our committed project team worked closely with GMSS’s to ensure that the rollout was done on time, to budget, and that everyone was kept in the loop with all the latest updates.

Happier patients who are having a better experience

The new patient check-in machines have really helped to provide patients with a better experience when entering their practice. Having spoken to patients at one site involved in the roll-out, Alvanley Family Practice, they told us that the check-in process has never been quicker. And now that there aren’t any queues, staff at reception have more time to speak with patients if they need to talk to someone.

Saving time and vital money

It’s not just patients who are better off though – staff are too thanks to huge time savings. On average, a minute is saved per check-in via our system. With around 60 patients using the system a day, that works out at 250 hours of time saved across all sites. During an entire year, that’s a whopping 91,250 hours saved across all practices involved in the project.
